Facebook : 10 great tips

1:54 am in Tech, Tricks by vapvarun

With Facebook’s ever-changing layout, and the fact that other social sites are encroaching on its real-time update strangle-hold, it’s easy to forget that there are some pretty nifty tricks you can pull using your humble Facebook status.

We’ve pulled together 10 great how-to tips that will help you get the most out of your status update, from official features to apps, Easter eggs, jokes and more.

Perfect for newer Facebook users, or anyone who is looking for a refresher, read on and let us know the ones you like in the comments below.

1. HOW TO: Add a Dislike Option to Your Status Update

“Like” buttons are everywhere on Facebook, and they’re everywhere on the web. But what if you want to update your status or share something that your friends can “dislike?” We know, your friends can choose to “comment” on your post, but where’s the fun in that?

The clever Status Magic Facebook app can add a dislike button to any status updates posted via the app. And if you wanted to really mix it up you can actually customize the second emotion to anything, such as “love,” “hate,” “disagree” or even “LOLs.”

2. HOW TO: Hide Status Updates From Certain People

Using Facebook’s general privacy settings (find these by hitting “account” on the top right of a Facebook page) you can select whether everyone, just friends or friends of friends can see your status updates. However, there is a way to narrow those options down even further.

You can select specific friend lists to see your status (relevant for work, special interest groups, etc.) or even individual people by name, which is useful for anyone organizing a surprise party.

To take advantage of these options, click the padlock icon just below your “what’s on your mind” box on your wall and a drop down menu should appear. Selecting “customize” will bring up more options such as “make this visible to” and “hide from” with the option to make your selection a default.

3. HOW TO: Pre-Schedule Status Updates

While SocialOomph, Sendible and HootSuite offer the same kind of service, the simplest way to schedule Facebook status updates is by using the easy, free Later Bro service.

Just sign in with Facebook Connect, select your time zone, type in what it is you’d like to say, set the calendar and clock to when you’d like to say it, and presto!

4. HOW TO: Tag People in Your Status Updates

This was quite a big deal when it was announced this past September, but from the amount of searches on the topic “how can I make someone’s name go blue in a Facebook status?” it seems it’s not universally known.

To mention someone in a status update just type “@” (a la Twitter) in the status bar and start typing their name as it appears on Facebook. An auto-generated list will then come up with people in your social circle whose name starts with the letters you’ve typed. The feature also works with pages, brands, events and companies.

Hit the name you want, complete the update, click share and the name will become a hyperlink (you won’t see the @ symbol) and will appear in blue text.

5. HOW TO: Add Symbols to Your Facebook Status

Although there are plenty of emoticons that work with Facebook Chat, typing “:)” into Facebook’s status bar will not magically transform into a smiley yellow face. In fact, the only symbol you can create in a Facebook status update through the shortcut keys is a ♥, by typing “<3."

While this won’t bother many Facebook users, others more used to punctuating their missives can copy and paste web-happy, universal symbols into the box, as you can see in the screengrab above.

PC users can also access some symbols by hitting “alt” + various number combinations (on a numerical keypad). So, while smileys are yet to hit Facebook statuses, you can annoy or amuse your buddies with symbols right now.

6. HOW TO: Turn Your Status Updates Into a Word Cloud

There’s a really fun way to visualize anyone’s status updates (even an entire country’s) as a word cloud. The Status Analyzer 3D app will look at what it is you’ve been chatting about lately and generate a list, and then a pretty, colorful, animated cloud as pictured above.

You can share the results with others on the social networking site by posting it to your friends’ walls or by adding it to your profile.

7. HOW TO: Have Fun With Facebook’s Humorous Language Options

While you can always change your setting into more sensible alternative languages, the site offers a couple of fun linguistic Easter eggs.

You can chose to have Facebook display upside down English, or, for anyone feeling a little salty, in “pirate.” Pirate essentially turns your status into your “plank,” your attachments into “loot” and instead of “share” it offers the option to “blabber t’ yer mates.”

Sadly, anything you type in the status bar won’t be upside down, or pirate-y. But with the use of some external sites you can achieve the same effect.

TypeUpsideDown.com and UpsideDownText.com are just two examples of sites that can flip your text, while the Talk Like a Pirate Day site can help you with your pirate translations.

8. HOW TO: See Status Updates From Around the World

If you want to get a glimpse of the thoughts of Facebook users from around the world’s, head over to OpenBook.

Created by three San Fran web developers with a serious privacy message in mind, the site aggregates the status updates of everyone whose privacy levels are set to “everyone.”

You can narrow your searchable results down by gender and keywords to find out what people are saying about a certain topic. Or you can just browse the recent searches.

9. HOW TO: See Your Status Update Stats

Have you ever wondered how many times you have updated your status on Facebook? The Facebook app Status Statistics, can tell you this and more.

The app analyzes your updates and gives you a tidy list of how many you’ve written, the average word count and how many times a day you post. In addition, it generates a graph that shows you what time of day or what days of the week you normally update.

Old statuses are also searchable via the app, so you can find that witty retort you made back in November 2009 without having to scroll back through your history.

10. HOW TO: Play a Trick On Your Friends in Your Status Update

We have a funny one to end on — a way to play an amusing trick on your Facebook buddies.

This clever link “http://facebook.com/profile.php?=73322363″ looks like it could be a URL for anyone’s Facebook profile, actually takes anyone logged into Facebook to their own profile page.

If you try it out, be sure to remove the link preview that Facebook auto-ads. Have fun, and don’t be too mean…

PayPal: Mobile Express Checkout

10:58 pm in Blogging, Tech by vapvarun

eBay has made it fairly clear that mobile is the future for e-commerce. And the numbers only reinforce this strategy- mobile payments are poised to reach $200 billion by 2012, according to Juniper Research. So, of course, eBay is wants to make its crown jewel, PayPal, the leader in the mobile payments space. In fact, PayPal’s mobile transactions have grown as smartphone usage has increased, from $25 million in 2008 to $141 million in 2009. In 2010, PayPal expects more than half a billion dollars in mobile payment volume with more than 5 million members regularly using PayPal from their mobile devices. Today, PayPal is making it easier for merchants and consumers to pay for goods on their smartphones with the launch of Mobile Express Checkout.

Mobile Express Checkout is the mobile version of PayPal’s Express Checkout service, which is a one-stop payment option streamlines the checkout process for consumers. A buyer will not have to reenter shipping, billing, or payment information for a PayPal payment, expediting the checkout process. All they need to do is enter their PayPal account login. It’s similar in theory to Amazon’s one click ordering option.

Merchant Express Checkout has been optimized for smartphone screens and also features strong fraud detection, says PayPal. Mobile Express Checkout is initially being rolled out on the iPhone and Android 2.0 (and higher) devices by a few retailers, including Nike and Buy.com, over the next few weeks. The technology will eventually become available to all retailers in the next few months.

PayPal sees this new mobile technology has an opportunity to allow the company’s 85 million members to easily buy goods on their phones using PayPal’s technology versus inputing a credit card. The company is sure to be on to something with this strategy-inputing your credit card, shipping and billing info on a phone is an arduous and time consuming task.

Automating this process is surely the future of mobile payments and shopping. Of course, it’s safe to assume the credit card companies, like Mastercard and Visa, will also be heading down this road soon.

SEO industry

2:53 am in Tech by vapvarun

SEO-Evolution – In recent years, has done a lot of the SEO industry itself: the search engine evolves through numerous changes, modifications and improvements, after all, they wanted to race in the steady – no, in the fight – for the best, objective results, manipulation should defy everyone, seeking for its own search engine of them all. On the other hand, increasingly also increased the number of search engine optimizers to clear – and with it the rate of those who – only driven by idealism – not always really had no idea. no issue, since it can only partial knowledge or even falsehoods, such as poorly exposed but are the same, if there is little secure, official information only. Another phenomenon was at this time but also sometimes very bold stylization of one’s own self to the person to a differentiable brand.

With increased use of the associative cortex, the chances of innovation is significantly better than the mere copying.

The so within the digital flow channel "formed" Popstars "there were many (semi-knowledge) can now identify people," prominent "leaders of the industry. With so much ignorance on the one hand and production on the other, raises the question of what really constitutes a good search engine optimizer? Does the quality of a book by the cover image really evaluate it? Certainly not – even if it sometimes seems at first. No, the thing is more complicated.Looking at the whole thing a little exaggerated scientific, can be in the industry followings-types identified:

Mirror neuron type

The human brain does in many situations, the ability of the mirror neurons back. With the help of man is the one able to perceive the feelings of the opposite (sympathetic, empathic responding to), on the other hand others to copy actions, without even derive them or think about it sometimes can be enormously time-saving müssen.Das and even be life-even.Sometimes, the resulting herd but to mislead, and for no particularly satisfying, powerful overall lead. One thing is clear: Innovativion looks different, or is on such a path even excluded altogether.

Associative Cortex-type

The associative cortex of the human brain enables us to common context of two different situations to derive a. The information obtained can be adapted to situations and optimized for subsequent action be tabled for one. In this way gain invaluable experience in the context of a search engine optimization are extremely important. By the way: The brain of the monkey also has an associative cortex, its much smaller in scope but fails to. The primates share more on the benefits of mirror neurons. In "the wild" type is the one described in almost pure form are good. Nevertheless, one can see clear focus is one that also shows the same time, whether it is a good or bad SEO concerns.

One thing is clear: With increased use of the associative cortex , the chances are much better at innovation than the mere copying. And that’s what it’s what is important: if I am doing the SEO only as what others have done already, I will never get better overall results. The constant experimentation, observation and the correct derivation is extremely important. Missteps belong to and are also important if one is in a position to learn from them and also to derive the right conclusions. Conversely, however, this should not mean that the account of the experiences of others would be superfluous. Often arise, however, on closer inspection, other conclusions, as described by the author. New information should therefore open, and in any case, but critical of. Here is also recommended to be not of the type of presentation also to be dazzled, even the testimony of the scene, celebrities and even the official spokesman for the search engines should always be tested on plausibility of content.

Ranking Factors: The hunt for the Holy Grail

Sometimes seems to me the hunt for a full list of all possible ranking factors similar to those of the highest on the number of megapixels in digital cameras. This aspect is not necessarily the technical eintscheidet on a high quality image, but the photographer. Course is a minimum technical quality required to, but ultimately can only experience for photographers provide the perfect end result. Each search engine optimizer should therefore about the SEO basics have. Everything else will be shaped by experience, which must be applied individually.

The maxim of the search engines

Actually, everything is very simple: search engines want to rate humanoid, because after all results are for people interesting, relevant websites are available with the. So you look the seeker on the fingers. Basically, Google does this for development of the PageRank algorithm, which on the evaluation of incoming links as recommendations involving social aspects, yes. the concept was refined and supplemented that is well known. The basic approach is, however, remained – and with it the maxim: Man.

Although it was long time not very effective as people and not just for search engines to create websites, so Google & Co. are now more capable sites from a human perspective to consider because more and evaluate. At least it succeeds in parts quite well, and, increasingly, more and more. Search engines are increasingly in a position to user behaviorto be included in the ranking. For this reason, aspects of an optimal usability and more important. "SEO & Usability" or even further: the user experience) to increase growth (together. Optimal Usability provides not only for improving the conversion, but is also an important part of SEO.

Conclusion

A good search engine optimizers must now face the diverse challenges. In many forums can often read that modern SEOs, artistic interest and talent must be able editorial. Finally, you should be interesting text, but also can produce videos with a viral touch wildfire in (Keywords: vertical Search). Quite honestly, this is not the task of the Search Engine Optimizer. Rather, it must be in a position, to survey the whole large and the individual components together to bring. Above all, he should not monkeys to make themselves and the use of his mirror € use only. He should use his associative cortex and make use of this time also on the nose look with SEO.

The basic approach is, however, remained – and with it the maxim: Man.

SEO is developing so fast becoming a cross-discipline, that of the classic search engine optimization and optimization of the user experience is made. Where is the question of how such cross-examination will be titled again. Even now uses the term "SEO" is already far too short and can not even guess where this journey goes. A good SEO is thinking not only to isolated ranking factors, but aggiert from the perspective of search engines and their basic motivation. SEO is the only way today – and even more tomorrow …

Which one is better: WordPress Vs Blogger

12:05 am in Blogging, Tricks by vapvarun

Blogging has become a very popular method for sharing knowledge, discuss viewpoints, personalize your business and increase the opportunity for inbound links and traffic. Given the increasing popularity of blogging today, it has become imperative that you choose the perfect medium for posting your blogs. Blogger and WordPress are two leading blogging platforms that have gained in popularity over the years.

Blogger can be described as a popular free hosted blogging platform while WordPress is a popular self hosted blogging platform. However, recent times have seen a switch to more WordPress blogs than Blogger. In order to understand the reasons for this shift and whether it makes sense to switch or not to WordPress, it is important to understand the innate differences between the two and the advantages of one over the other.

  • WordPress allows you to freely host your blog site onto your hosted website or anywhere else for that matter, which is not possible with a Blogger blog. WordPress hosted on your own server under your own domain will help much more with SEO than having a Blogger account at a separate Blogger URL which directs traffic to them and doesn’t keep them on your site.
  • The amount of control you exercise over your blog site is limited in Blogger as you do not have the option of choosing your content etc but in a WordPress blog, you are given complete control of your blogging content, which makes the latter more compatible for those wanting to market their businesses.
  • WordPress blogs provides you with more options for customization than Blogger blogs. While this may be intimidating to a novice, it is not very difficult to learn or master.
  • Changing your layouts and templates using WordPress is very simple and can take place even if you are not aware of programming or coding. However, this is not the case with Blogger blogs, where you need to understand coding, if you want to make changes to your template.
  • While both WordPress and Blogger offers the user a variety of plug-ins and widgets to use from and create a blog site, it is important to note that WordPress offers more variety and types in comparison to Blogger, whose options are pretty limited in the area. Moreover, the kind of widgets offered by WordPress are more sophisticated than the Blogger ones, like those that allow you to keep track of traffic to your website or even allow you to put up spam filters and the like to ensure good traffic to your website.
  • It is interesting to note that with WordPress, you can create static pages and generate SEO friendly links with the click of a single button, which again is not possible with Blogger, although many may argue that Blogger is more recognized by Google, as it is owned by Google.
  • Though both blogs are easily picked up by RSS feeds, a WordPress blog can actually help you monitor your tracking statistics, which makes it more attractive in the long run as the same is not possible with Blogger.

Be Familiar with your Web Settings : WEBSITE ERRORS

10:25 am in Blogging, Web Designing, Websites, Wordpress by vapvarun

Unless you own your web server and have coded the scripts of your website you’ll have little trouble finding the cause of errors your site may encounter. But for the rest of those who rely on external services, dealing with errors may be a major headache.

Many bloggers are ill prepared when it comes to the malfunctioning of their weblogs. Some become so defeated that they abandon their site; others get so overwhelmed they don’t seek help; still others do their own unscrupulous tinkering causing much further damage.

In the advent of any errors experienced by our site, it is imperative that we take the appropriate approach in addressing the problem.

    Keep Track of Your Settings

First and foremost, it is wise to have a journal of your website. By this I mean records of everything within your site. You must have a detailed account of the general settings, the plugins or ad-ons installed, the contents, and any major activities you have performed on your site. You will need this information should an error occur and it will be very helpful should you seek the assistance of support services.

So if you haven’t developed any journal yet, start one now, this will save you a great deal. Also, make sure you regularly backup your sites most important files. In this way you will always have something to go back to. Believe me, this is a life saver.

If You Face A Major Error, Contact Your Hosting Company

Should an unexpected activity suddenly manifest on your site—i.e., site does not load, display is jumbled, http error codes, site hacked (God forbid!)—you must always remember not to panic. The immediate thing you need to do is to ask for assistance. Your server provider’s support services will play a vital role in troubleshooting your sites problem. The fastest assistance can be gained thru chat with the server’s technicians and trouble-shooters.

Keep in mind though that assistance personnel may vary in their technical knowledge. If the personnel whom you’ve addressed your problem cannot solve your concern try another one, believe me you will find one who is more knowledgeable that can help you. Oftentimes, this method is more than enough to relinquish your problem.

Still, support personnel have limitations in that they their assistance can only cover server configuration related problems. More often than not, they cannot help if the problem lies within your web platform. If certain errors are outside of your web servers configuration, then you have to check any alterations you have made on your web publishing application. If you are using WordPress it is imperative to familiarize your self with its codex.

Most of the errors we experience from our website spawn from the alterations we introduce by means of messing with the source code or the introduction of applications like plugins or add-ons. Every time you make changes to the code, be sure to journal where you’ve made the changes and save a copy of the original source code; in case an error when you alter the source code, you can restore it back by restoring the original.

Plugins also cause some errors on our site. Since we are not familiar with it’s coding and behavior, it may pose a conflict with other add-ons or the publishing application itself. In this case, having a backup of your system is extremely important. But before deciding to restore your back-up, consider tinkering first with the plugins. Assuming that you have a journal of the activities you made with your site, you will be able to pinpoint, where the problem has started. It could be a plugin you have installed recently that caused your web error. Of course, the viable solution is to disable it. In the past I have had problems with upgrading my WordPress automatically; even the support personnel of my server provider can’t give any solution. What I did was I disabled all my plugins before I upgraded, and this methods works without any hustle. Have I not tinkered a bit, I would have not find a solution. Remember to consider some calculated tinkering; this may give you some hint about the problem.

Having errors popped out of our website is indeed depressing, but instead of wallowing in frustration we should focus our energies in finding solutions. The above-stated methods I have tried and tested during those periods when errors continuously bugged my website. I’m so happy to have learned from this experience. And now I share it with you.

Are you out of space in gmail and inbox size is growing like a mountain?

4:20 pm in Tech, Tricks by vapvarun

Are you out of space in gmail and inbox size is growing like a mountain? then here is a quick tip on how to search and delete all the unwanted heavy files, recently i saw that my gmail space was already 78% full as i rarely log into gmail web as i use gmail imap along with outlook express and it was expected as i am using my gmail account from almost 5years from now and it is one of my primary email id so i thought of clearing all the unwanted heavy forwards with attachments and videos so below is the simple method i used to free the space.

gmail gives you a luxury of retrieving any mails with specific attachments by using simple queries and to list the mail headers which satisfy the condition so to search and delete all the audio and video files you can submit the below query in the search bar in your gmail

        "has:attachment (*.mp3 || *.avi || *.wm || *.mov || *.wmv )"
the query is simple and human understandable just add the extension *.mpeg or any other format extension if you have received those kind of files in your mailbox
to find and delete large documents and spreadsheets or any other files such as visio docs etc use below query
        has:attachment (*.pdf || *.doc || *.docx || *.xls || *.xlsx || *.ppt || *.pptx )
Most of the time pdf, ppt and docs consumes most of our mailbox space
similarly to delete all the compressed or zipped attachments use below query
        has:attachment (*.zip || *.rar || *.7z )
you can even add .cab, .iso etc to the above query according to your needs

now after applying the filter and searching you can easily delete the unwanted mail from your inbox note after deleting the mails make sure to empty the thrash to get back the space as gmail keeps deleted mails in the thrash for certain period of time to recover in case if we want it back

        Problems with Google Buzz:
